This placement I feel I have grown so much as a future nurse and as a person, and I have certainly been humbled. I was not sure what to expect in a chronic placement, as it has not been an area I had particular interest in. You can imagine my surprise when it has turned out to be my favourite one yet!
I have spent the past five weeks watching those recovering from strokes try to gain back the version of themselves before their event. I have seen the sadness, pain, anger, frustration, and even hope. Each of these emotions have inspired me to become a better nurse, supporting patients and their families through the journey. I have learned about different types of stroke, protocol at PRHC, and the connection between lab values and medications.
Next semester, I am going to be doing my pre-consolidation on B5 Surgery at PRHC. I have many goals, and many are a continuation of the goals I set for NURS3021. I want more experience with nursing skills, such as catheters and medication administration, and am excited to learn how to insert an IV, perform wound care, and anything and everything! I intend to continue improving my therapeutic communication, and using my critical thinking for every patient interaction.
I am very grateful for the opportunity I had this semester. I have learned so much that I will carry with me through to the end of my schooling and to my future career.
