Compassion is one of the key values in nursing. Being compassionate shows patients and their families that you care, and respect, their questions and concerns. As nurses, we support patients through some of their toughest days, and showing compassion is a way to help them feel heard and supported. I feel being compassionate is such an important value and a way to make people feel validated. I know that if my family members or friends were being treated by a nurse, I would want that nurse to be compassionate towards the situation that led them to need treatment. This is why I want to ensure that every day, no matter what is happening in my personal life, I am compassionate when speaking and listening to my patients
Accountability is imperative for nurses to protect their patients, colleagues and themselves. Acknowledging our actions and owning our mistakes helps us grow not only as nurses but also as human beings. I have always felt it was important to own up to my mistakes to make me a better person and soon, a better nurse. I feel in my life I have been able to achieve this, even when it’s been hard to do or something was at stake. It was more important to me to be accountable for my actions than for people to think I wasn’t responsible. As nurses, people are trusting us with their lives and we owe it to every one of them to be accountable.
Professionalism is a value that encompasses many others. As nurses, we need to collaborate with other healthcare professionals for the best interest of our patients, our colleagues and ourselves. We are the face of our profession, as well as our employer, and exhibiting professionalism will make patients more comfortable as well. I value professionalism, as it shows pride in being a healthcare professional and puts our patients at ease.
Nurses show integrity to demonstrate their honesty, morality and ethics. Patients can be assured that a nurse is providing them with honest and ethical care during their treatment and recovery. Integrity is very important to me, as I consider myself an honest and moral person. I consider myself to have a strong moral compass, and this is something people know about me. They know they can trust me and count on me. I know that when I become a nurse, my patients will be treated with the care and respect they deserve.
